For the most part, that old adage rings true: Dogs are a man’s best friend. Bloodhounds are universally regarded as the quintessential “scenting” dog, and have been used as “gun dogs” in assisting hunters for decades. They are very loyal and great with kids because tend to be a breed that will tolerate being poked around a lot without getting angry, though of course this means that you should probably keep an eye on their interactions with children who go a bit too far playing rough with them. They are incredibly mellow in their nature, and it really is a huge bonus that they do not need to brushed since they have very short fur and do not shed much at all.
This is one of the smaller dogs on the list, typically weighing only around 8lbs, they have extremely high energy levels and are curious about virtually everything that they encounter! Luckily the Neapolitan version is the opposite, with a strong-willed but at the same time tolerant and friendly character which makes it a fine choice for families with children. It is also known to be very protective, and happily for a dog of this gigantic size and build, minimal shedding or grooming due to it’s short haired coat.
Forget about what you imagine typical Greyhounds to look like, because the Italian Greyhound is a tiny dog that only ever weighs between 1 to 15lbs. They have moderate amounts of energy being so small, so you can get away with not walking them regularly, as they can burn off this energy in your home or garden. They are quite timid and frail in character and build, but they more than make up for this by being low maintenance dogs and because they are so tiny they do not really ever shed and don’t need much in the way of grooming.
A nice small-to-medium sized dog typically weighing in at 20lb, they can sometimes get a little over-excited when playing which means it suits a home with older children or teenagers who have a sense of boundaries. Still, the Basenji has some of the most sturdy and short hair out of all the dog breeds. So it almost never sheds and requires next to know brushing and grooming.
